basement woes

The basement in our home has always been a thorn in our sides. But over the past week it's been poking pretty hard with all the rain we've gotten. Scott and I thought we had fixed the problem a while back... a little pin hole in the foundation that let water stream in like a fountain.

Now our problems seem even bigger. The egress windows don't seem to fit tightly in the wall, and with heavy rains and a window-well that doesn't exactly drain, the water rises up, and sneaks right under the window and into our house!

The musty smell has been atrocious, and so we bit the bullet and did a little demo. One wall of wood paneling is gone with half the carpet. Sure, we could have tried a little Bissel action to suck up the water, but I can only think that there would have always been something left behind, and no one wants to live in a sick house. I'm happier already knowing that part of the nastiness is gone.

The next step is figuring out how to repair the window, and get the ground to drain water AWAY from our house. It's such a shame that our beautiful tax return will probably go towards a repair that no one will ever notice. But knowing that God won't give us more than we can handle, it's easy to recognize how perfect the timing is for these "troubles" to spring up.
