proof positive

With a Christmas tree in the living room, with gray skies in the afternoons, with late sunrises and early sunsets, with needing that extra bit of elbow room and a change of scenery, with overnight company, with toys exploding everywhere, with a preschooler who sometimes desires her own corner and toddler now on the go... the remodeled basement has become an amazingly cozy and comfortable resource for our family. No doubt we are thankful for this space. It was so worth it.

care for a tour?

The time has finally come - the basement is finished! In our excitement last night, we started loading in some things. And tonight Scott installed the faux-wood blinds. Here are some shots of the main living space.

Organizing all the new cupboards and closets has been more than fun for me, and I've only just started! It feels good to have our basement back, although it will be strange without Basement Guy around. He became a part of our everyday routine. Over the course of the project, we got to know him quite well, and are so thankful for all of his amazing work.

Morgan and Andrew have really enjoyed the open space and the carpeted stairs.

We are so thankful for all this extra square-footage!

hold up

The basement is nearly finished with the exception of one major component: flooring. Because Basement Guy is using an external source for the carpet and vinyl flooring, and because the external source is completely unreliable when it comes to showing up, we are all in limbo. I am certain Basement guy is just as antsy to get paid as I am to do some laundry!

In the meantime, here are some pictures showing the nearly finished project. We are more than ready to move in and start enjoying our new living space.

slow and steady wins the race

Or so I've heard.

Basement progress is slow-going these days. At least that's the way it feels. With Memorial Day, Basement Guy's two days off for a planned vacation, and then being stranded with the Spirit Airlines strike (another lost day), we've been feeling like the project's feet have been dragging.

The good news is that the workmanship is fabulous, and that we are seeing the reality of our new space more and more every day. The end is in sight and we are anxious to help most of our belongings find their way to their new home.

Here's what our basement looks like to date with drywall, mud, tape, sanding, primer, trim and moldings, plus the ceiling grid work and covered support poles:

The beautifully drywalled soffit around the window, allowing maximum light and zero interference with the drop ceiling.

My mega-storage cabinet minus doors next to the dryer.
A matching upper cabinet will be installed later to complete the look.

The bi-fold door to conceal storage under the steps.
Another cabinet will be hung above the washer as well.

Left to do? Paint all the trim, doors and walls. Tile the bathroom floor. Install toilet, vanity, light fixture, mirror. Get some flooring down throughout. Wire all the recessed lighting. Pop in the ceiling tiles. Finish electrical. Build a bookcase. Create shelving in all the storage areas.

Whew! Is that it? I hope so. I'm praying that we're done by June 30. Join me, won't you?

buried treasure

Insulation of the basement was completed today, and tomorrow the drywall begins. Exciting! This transition also signals our last chance to leave behind something for the future. So tonight we did just that.

Because we were out of town over the holiday weekend, there was a mix-up with the delivery of our Sunday paper. We received two - the extra was a perfect time capsule item. Kept in tact with original sale flyers and rubber band, I slipped a note with the paper:

Our time capsule for the future. Buried May 2010 during basement remodel.
Scott, Rachel, Morgan and Andrew
(owners 2004 to ...?)

It now sits wedged under the framing of the basement steps. Tomorrow the newspaper and note will be enclosed with drywall, waiting to be discovered by future home owners. Will it be another 40 years before our treasure is found?

growing weary

It's pretty safe to say that the basement project is taking it's toll on all of us. The kids have been amazing as we make attempts each day to leave the house, but their behavior tells another story. Sleeping (or lack thereof), crabbiness, whining, you name it. They can only take so much. And Scott and I are tired. For the first time in ages, we are up at night with the kids, dealing with random issues as a result of inadequate naps during the day.

Thankfully the framing is done. Which means the noise from the power nailer (think shot gun) and air compressor (think lawn mower) echoing off the foundation walls has come to an end. Here are the latest pictures showing the progress:

Dryer area and temporary parking for the wash tub. Over the weekend, we did have access to our washer and dryer. I've never been more excited to do laundry!

Looking south at the new storage room.
Adjacent to that is the bathroom (with window).

The new configuration at the base of the steps. This setup will allow for a 32" door.

Up next is HVAC and electrical. These areas are two of the most important during this remodel, however, not exactly photo-worthy. In the meantime, we are all looking forward to existing in our home during the work days with a more tolerable tone of construction. Yay for progress!

under construction

Nope, not this blog. The basement!

When we bought our house, we knew full well that the term "finished basement" was being used pretty loosely in the property assessment. Painted wood paneling and industrial carpet just didn't do much for us, and when our window well failed to drain one year during a heavy storm, we ended up ripping off a wall of that lovely paneling and removing a section of the carpet. Don't let the pictures fool you, it was nasty.

Since that time, we've used the basement for nothing more than laundry and storage. Occasionally, our out of town guests would sleep on the extra-long full bed that was kept down there, but those times were few and far between. It really hasn't been a place of comfort.

Plus the basement has always been a small safety concern. We knew that there must have been a history there, things that weren't always seen. The musty smell has been somewhat overpowering. And the fact that our lighting was rigged with extension cords? Not good. Not to mention the toilet has been out of commission for the past year. The idea of continuing to use that space for actually living just didn't seem wise. So we started to research.

Two years ago we brought in our first expert, and after coming face to face with some rather large-numbered quotes, we paused on our momentum to forge ahead. In the meantime, we often wondered if remodeling the basement would be something the two of us could handle. After all, we know some very handy friends who might be able to help out. But it never came to that.

We weren't confident enough in our own abilities, nor were we willing to compromise six months of weekends to get it done. After all, this wasn't the same as installing crown molding, putting in a closet system or hanging a new light fixture. Friends or not, we knew a project this extensive was not for us.

After a winter of closeness in our small living room, we started looking around once again for professionals to quote the job. And as God would have it, Scott ran into a church acquaintance at Lowe's who, at the time, was having his kitchen remodeled. A two minute exchange in the store that afternoon landed us here today with a remarkable young man who not only owns his own business, but has a degree in architecture.

Our "basement guy", as Morgan calls him, is a perfect fit for us. He is meticulous in his work and has promised to go the extra mile. When he voluntarily told me he'd be vacuuming out the floor joists before installing the new drop ceiling, it was music to my ears!

Today is the first day of the project. Our basement was demolished in four hours, and it was a fascinating process. Scott and I were downstairs a few times to see the progression and both blown away at what "bare bones" truly means.

Here are some pictures detailing this journey. If you've ever seen our basement, you know what an enormous change this is. We're excited to watch it all unfold and share the process with you along the way.

The only treasure found during demolition (other than vintage tin ant traps) was a family signature from 1972. The names of Frank, Joy, Denise, Jeff and Melissa are written below. Our neighbor, an original settler, still keeps in contact with this family and has happily shared a bit of house history with us already. It's fun to imagine another family living within these walls nearly 40 years ago!

Stay tuned for more progress pictures!
